One-Dimensional Logic over Trees

چکیده
A one-dimensional fragment of first-order logic is obtained by restricting quantification to blocks of existential quantifiers that leave at most one variable free. This fragment contains two-variable logic, and it is known that over words both formalisms have the same complexity and expressive power. Here we investigate the one-dimensional fragment over trees. We consider unranked unordered trees accessible by one or both of the descendant and child relations, as well as ordered trees equipped additionally with sibling relations. We show that over unordered trees the satisfiability problem is ExpSpace-complete when only the descendant relation is available and 2-ExpTime-complete with both the descendant and child or with only the child relation. Over ordered trees the problem remains 2-ExpTime-complete. Regarding expressivity, we show that over ordered trees and over unordered trees accessible by both the descendant and child the one-dimensional fragment is equivalent to the two-variable fragment with counting quantifiers. 1998 ACM Subject Classification F.4 Mathematical Logic and Formal Languages

Satisfiability of the Two-Variable Fragment of First-Order Logic over Trees
We consider the satisfiability problem for the two-variable fragment of first-order logic over finite unranked trees. We work with signatures consisting of some unary predicates and the binary navigational predicates ↓ (child), → (right sibling), and their respective transitive closures ↓+, → . We prove that the satisfiability problem for the logic containing all these predicates, FO[↓, ↓+,→,→ ...
متن کاملDegree of Optimality as a Measure of Distance of Power System Operation from Optimal Operation
This paper presents an algorithm based on inter-solutions of having scheduled electricity generation resources and the fuzzy logic as a sublimation tool of outcomes obtained from the schedule inter-solutions. The goal of the algorithm is to bridge the conflicts between minimal cost and other aspects of generation. In the past, the optimal scheduling of electricity generation resources has been ...
متن کاملFinding Your Way in a Forest: On Different Types of Trees and Their Properties
We see trees in almost any part of computer science. Traditionally, ranked trees, that are nothing else but terms, captured most attention, although exceptions could have been found in graph theory or linguistics [9]. Recently unranked trees are a subject of renewed interest, mainly because of the developement of XML [22]. It is also quite comon nowadays to see trees with infinite paths, especa...
متن کاملMulti-objective design of fuzzy logic controller in supply chain
Unlike commonly used methods, in this paper, we have introduced a new approach for designing fuzzy controllers. In this approach, we have simultaneously optimized both objective functions of a supply chain over a two-dimensional space. Then, we have obtained a spectrum of optimized points, each of which represents a set of optimal parameters which can be chosen by the manager ...
متن کاملOne-Dimensional Logic over Words
One-dimensional fragment of first-order logic is obtained by restricting quantification to blocks of existential quantifiers that leave at most one variable free. We investigate one-dimensional fragment over words and over ω-words. We show that it is expressively equivalent to the twovariable fragment of first-order logic. We also show that its satisfiability problem is NExpTimecomplete. Furthe...
